2. Develop a Design Brief

Write 1 sentence to introduce this section of the project.

Questions/Areas/Topics that will drive my investigation:

1. Why produce an application video?

2. Universities that accept supplemental (essay) videos.

3. Research 3 videos to gather ideas and information. THEN analyze the information: what did you like? what didn't you like? what ideas did you get that you can use in your video? Include printscreens and urls.

4. What should I include in my video? / How personal should I get?

5. What tools can I use? (imovie, windows live movie, photostory 3 or any other tool that you have. Compare/contrast finding then decide which one you will use.)

Please leave a comment on this post to acknowledge that you understand your assignment and an appropriate design specification. If you don't understand the assignment, please raise your hand so I can help you. Thanks so much for that;-)

Friday we will work on the design specifications and tests and submit our work.

Learning objectives-The student will: independently identify meaningful questions, carrry out web search, select and organize appropriate sources and evaluate them.

It will be necessary for you to do homework.  If you would like to use the computer room at lunch time, please make sure to talk to me in advance.

Let's begin:

Year 11, new week, new project.

The results of the poll are in and you will be making videos to accompany your university application.  As stated before, more and more universities are asking for an optional video to supplement the university application process.

Area of Interaction Focus
Approaches to Learning:
Communication:  Informing Others
You independently and consistently structure ideas and arguments, both orally and in writing, in a sustained and logical way and support them with relevant examples across the Design Cycle.

You independently show awareness of the need for an effective choice of medium suited to the audience when choosing a tool to create your product/solution.

Significant Concept

The students will gain an understanding that the way you present yourself to others is important and can make a difference.

Year 11, let's continue on with the Evaluate - Criterion E.

Final Project due date - Friday January 20

The tasks are as follows:

1.The first task is to receive feedback on your product. Show it to members of the target group and ask them to complete the questionnaire that you created in the Investigation;-). Show it to your cooperating teacher and request feedback,

2. Write a paragraph analyzing the feedback,

3. Include excel chart to represent your data and include in your document to add a professional feel,

4. Evaluate your performance at each stage of the design cycle (Investigate, Design, Plan, Create) and suggest ways that you can improve,

5. Write a paragraph in which you evaluate the impact of your product/solution on OIS (Did you meet your unit goal? Relate this paragraph back to the Area of Interaction that you used in your "Identify the Problem" Investigate).

If you haven't yet submitted your Create, please come and discuss your intentions with me.

Term 2 Project - YOU DECIDE

Year 11, in Term 2 we will sit in the director's chair and create videos.

I would like your input to know which direction our journey should take us: Social Change  OR  University Admissions Supplement

The IBO mission statement proposes:
"The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect."

One way to create a better world is to give voice to those who have none as the following video does:

As you know more and more universites are asking for an optional video. The video adds more depth to the selection process and allows you to be creative. You become 3-dimensional and "real" and the video can offer 1 more way for you to showcase yourself and your learning.

Cast your vote in the poll located in the sidebar of this blog.

Year 11, Now on to Criterion E - EVALUATE (maximum 6)

According to the IBO, "Students are expected to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification in an objective manner based on testing, and to evaluate its impact on life, society and/or the environment. They are expected to explain how the product/solution could be improved as a result of these evaluations.

Students are expected to evaluate their own performance at each stage of the design cycle and to suggest ways in which their performance could be improved."

To get full marks the student:
evaluates the success of the product/solution in an objective manner based on the results of testing, and the views of the intended users,
provides an evaluation of his or her own performance at each stage of the design cycle and suggests improvements,
provides an appropriate evaluation of the impact of the product/solution on life, society and/or the environment.

1.The first task is to receive feedback on your product. Show it to members of the target group and ask them to complete the questionnaire that you created in the Investigation;-). Show it to your cooperating teacher and request feedback,
2. Write a paragraph analyzing the feedback,
3. Include excel chart to represent your data and include in your document to add a professional feel,
4. Evaluate your performance at each stage of the design cycle (Investigate, Design, Plan, Evaluate) and suggest ways that you can improve,
5. Write a paragraph in which you evaluate the impact of your product/solution on OIS (Did you meet your unit goal? Relate this paragraph back to the Area of Interaction that you used in your "Identify the Problem" Investigate).

January 9

Good Afternoon Year 11,

Please submit your Create (final product, paragraphs, process journal).

Today's lesson focuses on EXCEL. You will design a survey and evaluate the data. You will then create an excel chart to represent your findings. Save the chart as a jpeg. This will make it easy to insert into a Word document.  Follow the instructions on this Microsoft lesson carefully: http://www.microsoft.com/education/DesignSurvey.aspx

This lesson will serve you when you are documenting your findings in the Evaluate portion of this project.  By graphing your findings, you will take your document to the next level and it will look more professional.  These are skills that will be of value to you in other classes as well.

That's it in a nutshell - Let's go!

Please leave a comment on this post to acknowledge that you understand your assignment. Thanks so much for that;-)

IB Learner Profile:

Learning objective: Students will develop an understanding that presentation of their formal work matters.

Year 11 welcome back.  I hope you all had a fab holiday and I wish you lots of happiness and laughter in 2012.

Keep moving forward with your project.  Remember to update your Process Journal as you go.

The due date for the Create is January 9.  This means that you must have your final product completed, the paragraph(s) saying if your plan worked and indicating any modifications you made (include all justifications) and your Process Journal. I will need a hard copy of this.

If you have any questions, please feel free to raise your hand.

Please leave a comment on this blog post to acknowledge your understanding of your assignment.
